The pace of life seems to be ever increasing. There never seems to be enough time to accomplish everything you need to do, both in your work life and your personal life. Time seems to fly by, and you have that nagging feeling that you are losing control of how you spend your time. You seem to be more in survival mode and spending too much time on activities that are not meaningful and not contributing to accomplishing meaningful goals. However, if you try, you can regain control of your life. Here is a list of four things to should do to get back on track.
Getting enough sleep is essential if you hope to stay focused during the day. Sure, you all know this, but many try to get by with as little as four hours of sleep a night. Lack of sleep can lead to memory impairment, a shorter life span, higher stress, more depression, decreased creativity, dependence on stimulants, and an increased risk of getting into accidents. Part of the reason you don’t think you have enough time to accomplish everything you need to do in a day is that you are not working at peak productivity due to sleep deficiency. Strive for at least seven hours of sleep each night – you will feel better and accomplish more.
You don’t have to adhere to a specific religious belief system to benefit from meditating daily. Meditation helps you relax and, at the same time, helps you focus on what is important. You can meditate on personal matters, such as how grateful you are for your friends and family, or you can meditate on work-related matters, such as prioritising your work goals for the day or thinking about how helpful colleagues have been in working on projects with you. Meditating will help you project a calm appearance, and that may even help others in the workplace feel less stress.
Take the time to read and learn about subjects that are not necessarily work-related. Even spending 30 minutes a day reading will help you unwind as you think of subjects other than work. Before you know it, you’ll have read dozens or perhaps hundreds of books. You’ll become a more rounded individual with a broader knowledge of more topics, and this could help you gain a better perspective on the world and help you see how your work fits into the bigger picture.
Make a list of the short-term and long-term goals you wish to accomplish, both at work and in your personal life. Review that list every day, and check off the short-term goals as you accomplish them. Be sure you do at least one thing each day that helps you make progress in reaching your long-term goals. This way, you’ll be able to see the progress you’re making, and the sense of accomplishment you get will inspire you to keep working on those goals.
If you do these four things daily, you’ll feel more in control of your life.
